An undisclosed buyer purchased an unopened copy of Nintendo’s Super Mario 64 for $1.56 million at an auction.
The 1996 game, which was sold Sunday, broke the previous record of the auction house, Heritage Auctions in Dallas said Sunday. The auction house, however, did not reveal the identity of the purchaser.
The bestselling game on the Nintendo 64, Super Mario 64, was the first to feature the Mario character in 3D, said the auction house in a statement.
Earlier on Friday, an unopened copy of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda was purchased at an auction for $870,000. The auction house was surprised to see a game sell for more than $1 million two days after the Zelda game broke its past record, said Valarie McLeckie, Heritage’s video game specialist.
Earlier in April, an unopened copy of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. was sold by the auction house for $660,000. The game had been bought in 1986 as a Christmas gift and the owner had put it in a desk drawer and had completely forgotten about it until recently.
Yet earlier in July 2020, Heritage Auctions had sold a copy of “Super Mario Bros.” for $114,000.
