In a horrific road rage incident late Tuesday, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the head after someone opened fire on his father’s pickup truck. He is on life support at Hermann Memorial Hospital, the Houston Police Department said.
The teenager, David Castro, was listed in critical condition overnight. The incident happened immediately after the family left that night’s Houston Astros game at Minute Maid Park, police said.
The victim’s father, Paul Castro, told the police he was driving on Chartres when he encountered the suspect, who was believed to be in a car.
“The two drivers exchanged hand gestures and the suspect followed the victim’s vehicle onto the East Freeway and then onto McCarty Street,” the police department said in a press release.
“There, the suspect fired several shots at the father’s truck, striking one of the male passengers at least one time. The father stated he drove to the area of Highway 59 and McGowen Street and called 911,” it added.
David Casto was the only one to be shot out of three persons in the truck. His father said: “David was one of the good guys. He loved percussion and was to be a National Merit Semifinalist.”
The Houston Police on their Twitter handle said that “the 17-year-old male victim has been pronounced deceased at the hospital. Our homicide detectives obtained these surveillance photos of the suspect vehicle, believed to be a white Buick, 4-door sedan with a sunroof and driven by a black male suspect.”
The police then corrected its initial release on the boy’s condition, saying he is currently on life support.
“Please join us in praying for this young man and his family,” the department tweeted and also apologized sincerely to the bereaved family.
The police are looking for the suspect and have released an image from video surveillance displaying the white Buick Sudan. Paul Castro said that hopes that killer understands that he may have taken the life of a man who could have made a brighter future for his children.
