The U.S. citizens may not stand a chance to receive a fourth stimulus check. Still, a senior citizens’ body with no political affiliations has urged Congress to allow one more $1400 check to people who receive Social Security. The reason they say is that such a stimulus would help the beneficiaries tide over inflation, said a NewsBreak report.
The influential Senior Citizens League has urged members of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate members to consider the age-focused stimulus. The Senior Citizens League mailed a letter to Congress to this effect.
Senior Citizens’ Retirement Savings Dry Up
The report that quoted the letter said that many seniors who have their retirement savings used up had forced themselves to be satisfied with just one meal a day. Many have also begun cutting their prescription pills in half as they are no longer affordable. The Senior Citizens League added that these drastic steps are being taken by the people due to inflation this year, pointing out that many feel that their government has forgotten about them.
Though the U.S. government is planning to reform the Social Security payments, it remains to be seen what it would be. As per the report, the next year will see Social Security checks come with cost-of-living adjustments, which are expected to be the biggest in decades. It is expected that an increase of 6 percent is in the anvil.
Cost-of-Living Adjustments in Social Security Checks Not Enough
However, the Senior Citizens League isn’t happy still. Saying that such adjustments would not be enough, the senior citizens’ body believes that the larger Social Security payment might drag some seniors into higher tax brackets. And, in turn, would bring in additional surcharges to their Medicare Part B premiums.
Calling upon Congress to consider a particular stimulus for Social Security recipients, the Senior Citizens League thought that such a move would help defray those costs. Social Security benefits for 2021 went up just 1.3%, it may be noted.
The Senior Citizens League is hoping to urge seniors to make it a big issue in 2022 to have some good congressional support. However, it knows that this year’s chance of a special stimulus check is very rare.
