James Tarkowski started his journey with League One club Oldham Athletic in May 2009, joining on a two-year scholarship. He made his debut for the reserve team in October 2009. During the 2012–13 season, Tarkowski became a key center back alongside Jean-Yves Mvoto, starting in Oldham’s first six games and scoring his first goal of the season in a 2–0 win over Crewe Alexandra on October 2, 2012.
In January 2014, James Tarkowski transferred to League One side Brentford on a three-and-a-half-year contract for an undisclosed fee. After a stint on the bench, he debuted for Brentford in a 0–0 draw against Carlisle United on March 1.
