He started out doing gymnastics and later spent three years training with Merce Cunningham and a year with José Limón. He also helped start the experimental group Grand Union. In 1972, he came up with Contact Improvisation, a type of dance that explores how dancers relate to each other using things like friction, momentum, gravity, and inertia.
