Fentanyl Overdoses in US
Carrollton-Farmers Branch middle and high school pupils were sold fentanyl-laced tablets by six people. Hebron High School pupils bought pills. Federal agents nabbed 18-year-old Stephen Brinson last week. He is accused of being a Carrollton pill distributor with thousands of fentanyl pills at his Flower Mound residence.
Fentanyl kills the most 18-45-year-olds in the US, according to Harris County Senator Joan Huffman.
“According to the CDC, more than 75,000 Americans died from synthetic opioid overdoses, mostly fentanyl, in the 12-month period ending in February 2022,” she stated.
Last week, Senate Bill 645 passed overwhelmingly, allowing medical examiners to classify fentanyl deaths as poisonings. Prosecutors can charge distributors with murder. It will also make fentanyl manufacturing or delivery a second-degree felony for lethal overdoses.
Huffman previously enhanced fentanyl manufacture and delivery punishments.
The Drug Enforcement Administration cautions that 2 mg of fentanyl, which fits on a pencil tip, can be fatal. Fentanyl pills contain .02–5.1 mg. The DEA reports that fentanyl intoxication kills roughly 300 Americans daily.
