What is Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?

According to AARP, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a benefit program governed by the Social Security Administration that gives monthly pay to older, blind, and disabled people who are facing significant financial challenges. To be eligible, you must meet the SSA’s following criteria:

  • Be age 65 or older
  • Partially or completely blind
  • Have a health condition that stops you from being able to work

To determine your federal SSI benefit, the SSA subtracts your countable unearned and earned income from the highest federal benefit amount. This is the maximum monthly SSI amount for 2023:

  • $914 for an eligible individual
  • $1,371 for an eligible couple
  • $458 for an essential person, which is someone living with an SSI recipient and providing necessary care.

The maximum SSI payment amount changes annually based on cost-of-living adjustments, which are linked to inflation.

When to expect the double payment

If you are receiving both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income or you received Social Security before May 1997, you will receive your Social Security payment on March 3, and your Supplemental Security Income payment on March 1 and March 31.

Due to a quirk in the SSA’s payment timetable, individuals who are receiving SSI benefits are given two SSI payments in March, June, September, and December. According to Verify, SSI recipients will receive their payment on March 1 and March 31, but the latter payment is for the month of April – not a bonus payment.

This double payment happens because the first day of the month falls on a holiday or a weekend, based on the Social Security Benefits Payment Schedule of the SSA. SSI beneficiaries who are blind, disabled, or at least 65 years old with very limited resources usually get their payments on the first day of the month. This can become a problem for them if the first day of the month is a holiday or a weekend when banks are closed as it does on April 1, 2023, which is a Saturday. This double payment is the SSA’s solution to help.

What to do if you don’t receive the double payment

According to Finance Yahoo, if you don’t receive the double payment on the scheduled date, SSA advises waiting for three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security. If you receive a direct deposit, you may receive your payment on the scheduled date depending on your bank.
