Lynsey Bennett, 34, is being remembered after passing away. Her kids Zoe, 13, & Hailee, 8, as well as her father Coote, are left behind. Invasive cervical carcinoma was discovered in Longford native Ms. Bennett in 2017. In 2021, she reached a settlement with the High Court about the alleged incorrect reading of the cervical smear slides.
CervicalCheck scandal
Several hundred women were impacted by the CervicalCheck scandal over false smear test results, including Ms. Bennett. A 2018 assessment found that at least 221 women who had been identified with cervical cancer had not previously been informed about false-positive smear tests, which may have provided early cancer detection information.
She settled with the HSE last February regarding the alleged improper management of the cervical smear tests. She expressed her optimism outside of court that it would safeguard the future of her children. According to a statement from her attorney Gillian O’Mahony, Ms. Bennet died quietly on Thursday night. Following Lynsey Bennett’s terrible passing, Vicky Phelan sent a moving homage to her peers CercialCheck activists on Instagram.
Vicky’s Heartfelt Tribute
After spending the day in the hospital following a procedure, Vicky, who was also directly impacted by the cervical smear test controversy, joined those expressing their condolences to Ms. Bennett on social media. Vicky’s heartfelt note was attached to a photograph of Ms. Bennett with her young children. Stephen Teap, a fellow CervicalCheck activist who lost his wife to the disease, had earlier in the day called Ms. Bennett a “wonderful person” and expressed his “thoughts are specifically with her 2 tiny daughters.”
On Monday, October 31, at noon, a funeral ceremony for Ms. Bennett will be conducted at St. John’s Church in Longford, on Battery Road. Following, there will be a burial in the nearby churchyard. Anyone who wishes to leave a special note but is unable to join the ceremony may do so via RIP. Una Healy, a close friend of Ms. Bennett’s, published a homage of her own to a companion she went to Ibiza and Disneyland with in the summer.
And after her cancer diagnosis, doctors initially told Ms. Bennett that she only had 6–8 months to live. She recently celebrated 22 months since they first broke the news to her. She recently wrote on social media that she was “working on” figuring out how to let go of something that had caused her real bodily and psychological harm. She went to Mexico for treatment for cancer after learning that she had only around a year to live in November 2020.
Lyndsey filed a complaint in the High Court regarding the alleged improper reading of the cervical smear samples that were collected on behalf of the nationwide screening program. She spoke about the hospital staff’s assistance and her joy at watching her kids begin their 2nd year of high school & third grade, respectively, in her farewell post on September 2. A “big thank you” was added to her page for the “messages, checking in, and offering love” from those who had followed her.
