“Every person in the book goes through what I’ve gone through while creating a movie, as well as discovering a philosophy or learning an essential lesson,” Hanks told People. “Even the stupid moments are some trick or error I’ve survived.” It will unfold over several decades, beginning in 1947, when a veteran returns from the war, meets his nephew, leaves an imprint on him, and then vanishes for 23 years. After reuniting with his uncle in 1970, the nephew, now a creator of underground comics, decides to depict one of his uncles as a World War II hero. In the present, a filmmaker discovers his nephew’s comic book and plans to adapt it into a modern superhero film.

“Movie-making is arduous labor comprising so many moments of delight smashed up against an equal amount of sentiments of self-loathing,” he tells People. “It is the finest task in the world and the most perplexing labor I am aware of. I hope the book depicts as much of the ‘accidental judgments and casual slaughter’ that go into a motion picture mandate to hold a mirror up to nature as I have experienced (and caused) since joining the Screen Actors Guild.” Hanks, who played Elvis Presley in “Elvis” this past June, previously wrote a best-selling collection of short stories called “Uncommon Type” in 2017.
