Veteran actress Angela Lansbury has passed away. She was 96. According to a family statement obtained by PEOPLE, Angela passed away on October 11 and was best remembered for her role as the fearless mystery author Jessica Fletcher on the CBS television series Murder, She Wrote.

Actor Robby Benson, who played the Beast in the 1991 Disney classic Beauty and the Beast, told PEOPLE on Tuesday that being in the recording studio when Ms Lansbury sang the title song was one of the most unforgettable moments of his life. “The two minutes and forty-six seconds were a lifetime of inspiration for me.”

A Note From Jason Alexander

The Seinfeld actor Jason Alexander posted on Twitter on Tuesday in response to news of Lansbury’s passing, “The wonderful Angela Lansbury – one of the most versatile, brilliant, graceful, kind, hilarious, insightful and dignified woman I’ve ever encountered has left us.” Her enormous contribution to the arts and the global community “remains forever.”

In honour of Lansbury, film composer Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein posted a black-and-white portrait of themselves with Lansbury on Twitter.

He wrote, “Angela Lansbury – She was everything, my darlings.”

The statement, according to the newspaper, stated that “The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are heartbroken to announce that their mother died quietly in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, just five days shy of her 97th birthday.” She was also survived by her brother, actor Edgar Lansbury, and her three grandkids, Peter, Katherine, and Ian, in addition to her three children, Anthony, Deirdre, and David.

The daughter of Belfast-born actress Moyna MacGill and her second husband, lumber businessman Edgar Lansbury, Angela Brigid Lansbury went on to become a character actor (Mrs. Potts in Disney’s animated Beauty and the Beast) and leading lady (the eccentric aunt on Broadway in the musical Mame). Angela has received five Tony Awards, most recently in 2009 for her performance in Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit” as best featured actress in a play. She was awarded yet another Tony in June, this time for lifetime achievement.

In addition to playing Elvis Presley’s mother in Blue Hawaii (1961), a heartless parent in The World of Henry Orient (1964), the English witch Eglantine Price in Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), Mrs teapot Mrs Potts in the animated Beauty and the Beast, Angela also made a lasting impression on screen (1991). There will be a private family ceremony at a later date.
