After Mystery solves the mystery of the Luna, the gang disbands due to long-brewing friction between Fred, a glory hog, and Daphne, who has grown tired of being the one who gets captured, and Velma, from whom Fred regularly steals credit for her plans. This leaves Scooby, and Shaggy feeling abandoned. Two years later, they’re asked to investigate a mystery on Spooky Island, Emile Mondavarious’ horror-themed tropical resort. According to Mondavarious, the visiting tourists have been brainwashed. Velma watches a ceremonial performance by actor N’Goo Tuana and his henchman, luchador Zarkos. N’Goo alleges that ancient demons initially governed the island but have been planning vengeance since being ousted by the resort.

Scrappy evolves into a monster after absorbing the souls of the visitors and attempting to kill the group. Zarkos assaults Daphne, but she beats him by kicking him into the ritual room, where he knocks the vat over. The spirits are permitted to return to their bodies. Daphne dispatches the demons by reflecting sunlight via a disco ball. Shaggy pulls the Daemon Ritus from Scrappy’s body to liberate the rest of the souls and discovers the actual Mondavarious imprisoned, having been caught by Scrappy for him to appear as his counterpart. Scrappy, N’Goo, Zarkos, and their accomplices are all apprehended, and the group resolves to continue solving mysteries together. Shaggy and Scooby attend an all-you-can-eat celebration on the island in a mid-credits scene.

The show was created by CBS television executive Fred Silverman, who was looking for a way to move his network’s children’s programming away from the often-condemned violence of action and superhero shows and toward comedy. Joe Ruby and Ken Spears created the series, which debuted in 1969 and quickly became a huge success. The show’s structure allowed for almost unlimited permutations, and fresh Scooby-Doo episodes were produced under various titles until the early 1980s. In the late 1980s, other spin-offs and reimaginings, including A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, featured younger versions of the central characters.

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? (1969-70), the first Scooby-Doo-based cartoon series, created the fundamental structure for more than 30 years of storytelling. The dog—cowardly and gluttonous but good-natured—traveled around the United States in a van called the Mystery Machine with four young friends, the Mystery, Inc., gang: slacker Shaggy (voiced for the majority of the series by disc jockey Casey Kasem, long-time host of the countdown show American Top 40), wise ascot-wearing group leader Fred, beautiful but “danger-prone” Daphne, and brainy, to Scooby and his master, Shaggy, were typically terrified of their shadows, but always pushed by ravenous hunger, they placed themselves in danger for Scooby Snacks.
