History of the Lord Howe Islands

The Europeans first visited the Lord Howe Islands on the 17th of February, 1788. It was found by the commander of the tender, the lieutenant Henry Ball. Trading provisions began on the Island in 1842, and proper scientific expeditions started in 1861.

In 1878, Richard Armstrong was successfully named as the governor, and it was declared by the authority of New South Wales that the Island was a forest reserve. There were four successful governors after him till 1913, when a new government formed, and a resident superintendent was appointed to the job. Land tenure has been a direct problem on the Island as the people living there have directly demanded freehold title on the Island or absolute cultivated land for work.
