The set was constructed around the Mall, which features a Santa Village.
In late February 2008, production began in Boston. After Willowbrook Mall in Wayne, New Jersey rejected a permit, principal photography occurred at the Burlington Mall in Burlington, Massachusetts. The mall was decorated with Christmas decorations from late February to mid-April, and there was a large prop ball-pit in the main foyer of the mall near the Sears branch, as well as a Santa’s Village at the opposite end near the Macy’s department, where the mall puts its Santa’s Village. The majority of the interior filming took place at night. Some aerial feats, such as Blart being attacked in the scenic elevator, were carried out at Braintree’s South Shore Plaza.
