Whereas most K-dramas—even serious thrillers and hard-core romances—include a lot of lightness, some Korean shows are just nonstop chuckles. We’re talking about the hilarious moment after the hilarious scene, wildly ludicrous plot lines and circumstances, side-splittingly funny people, and fantastic physical humor. Koreans are fantastic at romantic comedies, and we frequently find ourselves doubling over in laughter one second and cardio the next. If laughing is the best medicine, then more K-drama rom-com healing is in order. Here are eight hilarious shows to watch while we enter our umpteenth semi-lockdown. You’re very welcome.
Mr. Queen:
If you’re resting next to your sleeping spouse or listening to music in a quiet area, avoid watching this show late at night. Because you will burst out laughing, the dilemma of a free-spirited, nearly obnoxious man chef sent back in time and locked in the body of a polite Joseon-era queen is so ludicrous and hilarious snort. Shin Hye-sun is funny as the titular Mr. Queen, who fights with her newfound femininity and the constraints of a previous age. The play becomes highly engaging and brilliant. The space becomes beautiful and intelligent if you leave your skepticism at the door. Cha Chung-hwa as Court Lady Choi is comedic gold in every moment as a supporting figure.
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo:
Lee Sung-Kyung plays the Weightlifting Fairy. Kim Bok-Joo steals the show as an innocent and pure-hearted collegiate weightlifter who falls in love with a famous swimmer. Her many pouty and exaggerated facial expressions could be irritating, but they’re also adorable and entertaining. This 2016 K-drama was a smash hit and a must-see for the sizzling chemistry between Lee Sung-Kyung and Nam Joo-hyuk, who married after the program.
Fans still ship them and can’t get enough of their delightfully infantile exchanges in this drama, even though they’ve split up. The passages in which he teases her at the beginning of the performance are fan favorites, as is a particularly amusing and heartwarming scene.
True Beauty:
Another recent blockbuster rom-com smash requires you to suspend your disbelief to appreciate it. Lim Ju-Kyung, a high school student, bullied because he is ugly, is played by Moon Ga-young. To the viewer, she appears to have a terrible complexion and an inferiority mentality, but her appearance causes her great distress in the show setting. But her life changes when she transfers schools and discovers make-up lessons on the Internet, and she instantly becomes the most beautiful girl on campus. The two hottest males in the school compete for her affections while she tries to conceal her true makeup-free face from them and everyone else.
Fight For My Way:
This 2017 rom-com is a fan favorite among K-drama fans who can’t get enough of Park Seo-amusingly Joon’s cringe male aegyo (a set of act-cute actions particular to Koreans). As the two progress from BFFs to omg-I’m-in-love-with-my-best-friend to making-out status, arguing and shouting at each other along the way, you can’t help but want them to succeed in love and life because they are so hilariously and delightfully wonderful for each other.
Strong Girl Bong-soon:
In this wild romp from 2017, one of the cutest and smallest Korean actresses plays a woman endowed with supernatural strength. Park Bo-young is endearingly hilarious and adorable as Bong-soon, who must conceal her super-strength from everyone. She’s employed as a bodyguard for Park Hyung-egotistical sink’s game company CEO, leading to ridiculous and hilarious antics. Some of the funniest scenes in K-drama are when she fights a bunch of thugs, puts them all in the hospital, and tries to pole dance at a bar but breaks the pole.
