In The Soul of America, author, journalist, historian, and prolific presidential biographer Jon Meacham provides his relevant and priceless insights into the contemporary political and historical context of the United States by studying its history. Based on Meacham’s 2018 bestseller The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels, the movie explores historical struggles from the past, including the women’s suffrage movement, the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, McCarthyism, and the fight to pass Civil Rights legislation in the 1960s – all instances in which “our better angels” fought against the forces of hatred and division that are at the root of our current political reality. Along with showcasing Meacham’s perspectives on America’s history and present, the movie also follows his life and career as a journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian.

The movie, which is equal parts political documentary and biography, combines archive footage, Meacham interviews, and commentary from writers, scholars, and civil rights activists. Meacham shows how we still have to deal with prejudice in American politics, economic distress, isolationist and nativist inclinations, and conspiracy theories by focusing on crucial times in our history that represent America’s ongoing battles with racism, sexism, and xenophobia. The movie finally offers optimism that the country may get closer to realizing its democratic principles due to the lessons learned in the past.
